Get to Know: Tom Gram

We recently added Tom Gram to the team. We sat down with Tom to get to know him better.

Tom, welcome to the TyRex Technology Family.

Tom, tell us a little bit about yourself. Where do you come from and where have you worked previously?

I got my BS in Chemical Engineering from Northeastern University in Boston, and most of my career prior to working at TyRex has been in the Aerospace/Defense industry. I interned at Draper Laboratories in Cambridge, MA, during college, then worked for several years as a contractor for the US Army and Air Force on projects ranging from demilitarization to ballistic missile development.

What drew you to TyRex? What particularly excites you to come work here?

I was initially drawn to TyRex due to their focus on additive manufacturing. I developed an independent interest in AM prior to working here, and was thrilled to find such an innovative and additive-focused company here in Austin.

Do you have any specialties or specific areas of focus?

My primary areas of focus at TyRex are in materials science, research, and software development. I’m our resident subject matter expert on 3D printing materials and the lead developer on TyRex’s AI program.

What areas are you looking forward to expanding at TyRex?

I’m particularly looking forward to expanding TyRex’s AI program. AI is a disruptive technology with almost limitless potential for growth, and TyRex has had the foresight to leverage the power of AI in several aspects of their business.

What are some things you wish the average person knew about your line of work?

Additive manufacturing is all about creativity. Anyone can purchase a 3D printer and start producing new parts and designs. The only limit is your own imagination.

So, this last question has become a bit of a tradition for us. What is the one tool you can’t live without?

I can’t live without my laptop. I’ll often come up with a new idea at home and want to test it out immediately. TyRex also has a large, amazing facility with nine companies under one roof, and it’s essential that I can bring my work with me wherever I go.
